Introducing the Next Generation for Change

At One World Together, we’ve been working behind the scenes to support schools, colleges, universities and youth groups to harness the power, energy and creativity of the Next Generation for Change.

As one of our three pillars that make up the New 1%, the Next Generation for Change is a multi-project programme specifically focused on young people aged 6-24. Through school-based learning and a university changemaker programme, we are co-creating and piloting activities that ensure young people are at the centre of shaping more just, sustainable, and hopeful futures. Futures that they want to see themselves in.

Empowering Youth Changemakers

We believe people thrive when they are connected: that’s why we are One World Together. Creating space for young people to collaborate, create and explore does more than grow the New 1% movement; it transforms how they see the future and what kind of world they might create. As one of our youth changemakers reflected this year:

“Being a change-maker has given me hope that there are good people in the world.”

Our university-based changemakers have grown the One World Together movement, learning through collective action, designing and hosting events and inspiring others through conversation and reflection.

Schools for Change

At One World Together, we know schools can be spaces of transformation, where learning is not simply the acquisition of knowledge but the cultivation of imagination, critical engagement, and agency to participate in social change. This work begins with the conviction that young people are central to shaping more just, sustainable, and hopeful futures, and that we do not have to wait until university to start.

Many Primary and Secondary schools are already committed to teaching sustainability, human rights and values related to being a global citizen. Our Next Generation for Change pillar supports schools in this work through workshops and activities designed around core themes that include generosity, kindness, hopeful imagination, and solidarity. We might explore stories of change from our partner organisations, interrogate our campaign around ‘change not charity’, or step into the world of development funding through role-play.

We know it’s never too early to believe you matter, that even the smallest acts of kindness, in all its forms, have ripples far beyond what we can see. To use the phrase of a 2024-25 changemaker, connecting through hope shows us all that, “little drops come together to create an ocean”.

As the New 1%, we are a movement for positive, hopeful change. We reimagine education and community in ways that are hopeful and future-thinking. We are the community who value today’s young people not just for who they are today but for the world they can create for tomorrow.

Connecting with you

Teachers and students are vital to our goal of ensuring we co-create the next phase of our Next Generation for Change schools programme, ensuring everything we do is meaningful, practical, and shaped by the people who will use them most.

If you would like your students to explore themes of changemaking and change not charity, our team at One World Together would be delighted to collaborate with you. We can deliver and/or co-design short, engaging workshops that invite young people to think critically about the world around them, imagine alternative futures, and see themselves as active change-makers.

Changemaking is not the work of isolated individuals but as the outcome of ecosystems where young people, educators, institutions, and communities act together. and can be the catalyst to take the next step.
